Abstract Here we present raw data from an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), deployed at a depth of 320 m at M4 (34.2950°S; 17.8802°E) along the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean, between 10 October 2018 and 29 September 2020. The South African component of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA) aims to characterise the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa.
Methods The raw data, collected using a bottom mounted, upward-looking, 150 kHz RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), was configured with a bin size of 8m and a blanking distance of 3.52m and deployed at a depth of 320m at location M4 (34.2950°S; 17.8802°E) along the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean. The instrument measured hourly magnitude and direction throughout the water column between 10 October 2018 and 29 September 2020.
