Abstract Here we present processed northward and eastward velocity components from a 2000 khz Aanderaa Doppler Current Sensor (DCS) deployed at a depth of 2750m at location P3 (34.499°S; 17.139°E) along the South Atlantic MOC Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean, between 12 August 2015 and 18 July 2017. The South African component of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA) aims to characterise the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa.
Methods A single-point 2000 khz Aanderaa Doppler Current Sensor (DCS) was deployed at a depth of 2750m at location P3 (34.499°S; 17.139°E) along the South Atlantic MOC Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean. The instrument measured hourly current speed and direction, between 12 August 2015 and 18 July 2017, which were processed using standard published University of Rhode Island (URI) software and protocols. Northward and eastward velocity components were subsampled to one value per day at noon (UTC), and have not been corrected for magnetic declination.
