Abstract | Here we present processed magnitude and direction of hourly currents throughout the water column (18.88 - 146.88m) from an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) at location M1 (46.773°S; 37.912°E) on the Prince Edward Island shelf, between 26 April 2021 and 06 May 2022. The South African component of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA) aims to characterise the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa. |
Methods | A bottom-mounted, upward-looking, 150 kHz RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was configured with a bin size of 8m and a blanking distance of 3.52m, and deployed at location M1 (46.773°S; 37.912°E), on the shelf between Marion Island and Prince Edward Island. The instrument measured hourly magnitude and direction throughout the water column (18.88 - 146.88m) between 26 April 2021 06h00 and 06 May 2022 04h00. These hourly values were corrected for magnetic declination and only hourly values which showed ≥ 75% good beam data were used. |
