Abstract The South African component of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA) aims to characterize the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa. Here we present processed magnitude and direction of hourly currents throughout the water column (20.71 - 148.71m) from an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) at location M1 (46.772°S; 37.899°E) on the Prince Edward Island shelf, between 01 May 2023 and 24 April 2024.
Methods A bottom-mounted, upward-looking, 150kHz RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was configured with a bin size of 8m and a blanking distance of 3.52m, and deployed at location M1 (46.772°S; 37.899°E), on the shelf between Marion Island and Prince Edward Island. The instrument measured hourly magnitude and direction throughout the water column (20.71 - 148.71m) between 01 May 2023 07h00 and 24 April 2024 11h00. These hourly values were corrected for magnetic declination and only hourly values which showed ≥ 75% good beam data were used.
