Abstract The West Coast Cetacean Distribution and Abundance Survey was conducted on Algoa Voyage 266, from 04 November to 15 November 2019. The cruise operated along the shelf and slope regions of the West Coast of South Africa, spanning from Dassen Island to Groenriviermond. The primary objective was to assess the distribution and abundance of cetaceans, particularly humpback whales, in the study area. This work adhered to internationally accepted protocols and provided practical experience in addressing logistical and technical challenges associated with dedicated cetacean research cruises.
