Abstract | The South African component of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA) aims to characterize the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa. Here we present processed magnitude and direction of hourly currents in the water column from an DVS located at a depth of 1357m at Mooring 8 (34.4991°S; 17.3019°E) along the South Atlantic MOC Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean, between 09 April 2017 and 09 October 2018. |
Methods | A subsurface-mounted, upward-looking, 2400 kHz RD Instruments Doppler Volume Sampler (DVS) was configured with a bin size of 0.8m and a blanking distance of 0.3m, and deployed at a depth of 1357m at location M8 (34.4991°S; 17.3019°E), along the South Atlantic MOC Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean. The instrument measured hourly magnitude and direction in the water column between 09 April 2017 11h00 and 09 October 2018 11h00. These hourly values were corrected for magnetic declination, and only hourly values which showed ≥ 75% good beam data were used. |
