Abstract The South African component of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA) aims to characterise the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa. Here we present processed magnitude and direction of hourly currents in the water column (1522 - 2622m) from DVS instruments located at Mooring 9 (34.5011°S; 17.1395°E) along the South Atlantic MOC Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean, between 10 April 2017 and 19 May 2018.
Methods Subsurface-mounted, upward-looking, 2400 kHz RD Instruments Doppler Volume Samplers (DVS) were configured with a bin size of 0.8m and a blanking distance of 0.3m, and deployed in the water column (1522 - 2622 m) at location M9 (34.5011°S; 17.1395°E), along the South Atlantic MOC Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean. The instrument measured hourly magnitude and direction in the water column between 10 April 2017 13h00 and 19 May 2018 07h00. These hourly values were corrected for magnetic declination, and only hourly values which showed ≥ 75% good beam data were used.
