Abstract The South African Coastal Ocean Forecast System Southeast (SACOFS) is run using the Coastal and Regional Ocean COmmunity (CROCO) modelling system. The SACOFS-West model domain encompasses St. Helena Bay, Table Bay and False Bay, located on the west coast of South Africa (18.56° to 20.00° E and -36.09° to -30.00° S). The model curvilinear grid has a variable horizontal grid resolution (0.35–4 km) which increases towards the coast. The model has 30 terrain-following vertical levels. The output is saved as daily averages, in monthly NetCDF files spanning from January 1993 to December 2019. Model output includes: averaged free-surface (zeta), averaged vertically integrated u-momentum component (ubar), averaged vertically integrated v-momentum component (vbar), averaged u-momentum component (u), averaged v-momentum component (v), averaged potential temperature (temp) and averaged salinity (salt).
Methods The simulation was developed using the Coastal and Regional Ocean COmmunity (CROCO) modelling system (https://www.croco-ocean.org/). The model configuration files can be found at https://github.com/SAEON/somisana-croco/tree/main/configs/sa_southeast_01/croco_v1.3.1, using compile options C01 and runtime options I01. Lateral open boundary conditions are interpolated from GLORYS12V1 (https://doi.org/10.48670/moi-00021). Surface forcing is interpolated from ERA5 (https://doi.org/10.24381/cds.adbb2d47). Model bathymetry is interpolated from SANHO (https://www.sanho.co.za/Default.htm).
