Abstract The South African component of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA) aims to characterise the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa. Here we present raw data from an ADCP, deployed at a depth of 309m at Mooring 4 (34.2942°S; 17.8803°E) along the South Atlantic MOC Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean, between 10 July 2014 and 09 December 2014.
Methods The raw data collected using a bottom mounted, upward-looking, 150 kHz RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was configured with a bin size of 8m and a blanking distance of 3.52m, and deployed at a depth of 309m at location Mooring 4 (34.2942°S; 17.8803°E), along the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean. The instrument measured hourly magnitude and direction throughout the water column between 09 July 2014 and 10 December 2014.
