Abstract The South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE) is an annual cruise undertaken by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) to change the overwintering teams in Antarctica and to replenish the supplies at the SANAE IV Research base. This voyage was to deliver the SANAE 55 team to the island and return with the SANAE 54 team. The cruise was undertaken between 05 December 2015 and 10 February 2016 with full scientific complement.
