Abstract This is processed Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) and Total Alkalinity (TA) data from the IIOE2 cruise on SA Agulhas II Voyage 028, between 14 October and 15 November 2017. The International Indian Ocean Expedition 2 is a collaborative regional cruise to build capacity and strength within Africa. The focus will be on developing students in the region in the areas of physical oceanography, chemistry, biological oceanography, benthic biodiversity, marine top predators and marine plastics.
Methods Seawater samples were collected in 500 ml bottles at selected depths from CTD Niskin bottles and spiked with 100 ul HgCl2 before sealing the glass bottle with a stopper. Samples were collected and analysed onboard using a VINDTA 3C. The accuracy was checked using certified reference materials (CRMs) obtainable from the Andrew Dickson Laboratory (for more information about the oceanic CO2 reference materials, see http://www-mpl.ucsd.edu/people/adickson/CO2_QC/). Precision was checked by analysing 10 replicate samples taken from 500 m depth at selected offshore stations. The precision for Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) and Total Alkalinity (TA) was 4.25 µmol/kg and 1.51 µmol/kg, respectively. The data was cleaned to remove obvious outliers. Further data cleaning to the satisfaction of the user is recommended.
