Abstract This is raw Surface Photosynthetically Active Radiation (SPAR) data from the Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela (IEP:SB) onboard the Algoa Voyage 239 (ALG239) from 22 to 29 May 2017. This programme is a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional platform to undertake relevant science in the Southern Benguela; also functioning as a platform for collaboration and learning. All projects aim to develop an ecosystem indicator that can be used to effectively monitor and understand the Southern Benguela i.e physical, chemical, planktonic, microbial, seabird and benthic ecosystem indicators, used for ecosystem-based management.
Methods Raw data in their original format, as received from the QSR-2000 Hemispherical Quantum Scalar Reference Sensor by Biospherical Instruments Inc. This sensor is designed for measuring total incident Surface Photosynthetically Active Radiation (SPAR) (400-700 nm) from the sun and sky. SPAR sensors are usually mounted on a vessel’s mast and the data can be used as a surface reference for underwater profiling PAR sensors.
