Processed CTD continuous observations from the Demersal South Coast Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 129, April 1995

Here we present processed downcast Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) continuous data collected between 23 April 1995 and 15 May 1995, during the Demersal South Coast Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 129, in the Agulhas Current Large Marine Ecosystem (ACLME) region on the south coast of Southern Africa. The main objective of the cruise was to survey demersal fish stocks and collect hydrological data.

Processed CTD discrete observations from the South Coast Demersal Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 131, September 1995

Here we present processed Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) discrete data from the downcast collected between 29 September and 19 October 1995, during voyage 131 on the Africana, in the Agulhas Current Large Marine Ecosystem (ACLME) on the south coast of Southern Africa. Neil Brown MK3 and MK4 CTD instruments were used to measure pressure, temperature and conductivity through the water column during research and monitoring cruises between 1983 and 2000.

Raw NDS data from the St Helena Bay Monitoring Line (SHBML) on the Algoa Voyage 194, February 2013

This is raw Network Data System (NDS) data from the St Helena Bay Monitoring Line February 2013 cruise (now under the Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela). The St Helena Bay Monitoring Line was initiated as a BENEFIT-driven project on "shipboard monitoring" which linked with similar lines run in Namibia and Angola. The aims are to obtain seasonal and interannual information on the hydrology and productivity of the area. Data on harmful algal blooms, low oxygen water and intrusions of Agulhas Bank water along the west coast will also be collected. A long-term, multi-decadel time-series (from 1951 onward) of information already exists for this important region and has continued in the form of the IEP:SB to detect long-term changes in the hydrology and the plankton, which are important for the detection of regime shifts.

Here we present processed downcast Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) continuous data collected between 13 November and 28 November 1995, during voyage 132 on the Africana, in the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) on the west coast of Southern Africa and the Agulhas Current Large Marine Ecosystem (ACLME) on the south coast of Southern Africa. Neil Brown MK3 and MK4 CTD instruments were used to measure pressure, temperature and conductivity through the water column during research and monitoring cruises between 1983 and 2000.

The West Coast Hake Biomass Survey was conducted on the Africana Voyage 100 from 06 February to 03 March 1992. Raw CTD data from the West Coast Cetacean Distribution and Abundance Survey on the Algoa Voyage 211, October 2014

This is raw Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) data collected on the West Coast Cetacean Distribution and Abundance Survey on the Algoa Voyage 211, 28 October to 10 November 2014. The cruise operated on the shelf and slope regions off the West Coast of South Africa, between Dassen Island and Groenriviermond. The major objective of this cruise was to survey the abundance and distribution of cetaceans, in particular humpback whales, within the study area on the west coast. This objective, along with the research aims and proposed methodologies, are consistent with internationally accepted protocols. This work provided hands-on experience with logistical and technical cetacean specific problems associated with dedicated cetacean cruises. This work was a collaboration with the Mammal Research Institute, University of Pretoria, and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

This is raw Shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (SADCP) data from the Southern Ocean Seasonal Cycle Experiment (SOSCEx) III Winter Cruise on the SA Agulhas II Voyage 016, 22 July to 15 August, 2015. The third Southern Ocean Seasonal Cycle Experiment (SOSCEx) III is a high-resolution full seasonal cycle experiment using integrated observational and modeling platforms. A novel aspect of SOSCEx III is the integrated multi-platform approach, which aims to explore new questions about the climate sensitivity of carbon and ecosystem dynamics in the Southern Ocean and how these processes are parameterized in models. This winter 2015 cruise can be divided into two primary tracks, the GoodHope line, between Cape Town and the ice edge along the Greenwich Meridian, and the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) line, between Cape Town and the Greenwich Meridian, at 34.5 degrees South longitude.

The Pelagic Fish Biomass Survey was conducted on the Africana Voyage 097 from 07 November to 03 December 1991. Horse Mackerel Hydroacoustic Pilot Survey on the Africana Voyage 096, October 1991

The Horse Mackerel Hydroacoustic Pilot Survey was conducted on the Africana Voyage 096 from 14-28 October 1991. The objectives of the cruise were to test the feasibility of obtaining an acoustic estimate of adult horse mackerel; to assess the ability to determine target detectability, target identification and target strength; to obtain an estimate of horse mackerel abundance in a sub-region. Microplankton image observations for May 2018 on the Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela (IEP:SB)

Microplankton, comprising both phyto- and zooplankton in the 20-200μm size range, are a diverse and ecologically significant group. They form the foundation of the food web, are instrumental in carbon and nutrient cycling, generate at least 50% of global oxygen and facilitate the transfer of energy to higher trophic levels. Although microplankton occur throughout the world's oceans, their diversity and abundance varies spatially and temporally. Due to their high sensitivity and rapid response to changes in the environment, their biomass and diversity are considered Essential Ocean Variables (EOV's) for routine and sustained long term observations to assess global ocean changes. This dataset forms part of the routine monitoring along the west coast of South Africa under the Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela, which occurs biannually in February and August. Raw SADCP data from Gough Island Relief on SA Agulhas II Voyage 017, September 2015

This is raw Shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (SADCP) data from the SA Agulhas II voyage 017, Gough Island Relief 03 September 2015 to 06 October 2015. The Gough Island Relief Voyage is an annual cruise undertaken by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) to change the overwintering team in Gough Island and to replenish the supplies at the British’s leased Gough Island Research base. The cruise also serves as a means to transport the residents and/or visitors to Tristan da Cunha using a signed agreement between South Africa and United Kingdom (UK). This voyage was to deliver the Gough 61 team to the island and return with the Gough 60 team. The scope of ship-based science for this takeover voyage was limited to underway observations and SAWS drifting buoy deployments.

South Coast Hake Biomass on the Africana Voyage 036, October 1985

The first objective of this cruise was to establish, by means of surveying and trawling between 200m and 500m water depths, the feasibility of extending the hake biomass surveys to the South Coast. The area 20 E to 25 E, from 75m to 200m water depths, has already been covered during biomass surveys by Japanese research vessels, accompanied on each occasion by one of the Institute's scientists. The feasibility of trawling shallower than 200m in this region, albeit with heavy gear, has thus already been established. The second objective was to investigate, by trawling, the depth distribution of squid in the area 23 30'E and 24 30'E, from as close as possible to the coast (i.e. as shallow as possible) to a depth of 500m.

Western Indian Ocean Sustainable Ecosystem Alliance Cruise on Algoa Voyage 197, April 2013

The Western Indian Ocean Sustainable Ecosystem Alliance Cruise was conducted on the Algoa Voyage 197, 1 to 29 April, 2013. Long-term offshore ecosystem monitoring in the SWIO started with the establishment of a shallow (18m) UTR network by ACEP. The ASCLME project adopted the UTR network and together with NOAA, NIOZ, DEA and ACEP instituted an annual mooring cruise. A wide range of state-of-the-art in-situ instruments from various international programmes and initiatives were deployed during the ASCLME cruises. ASCLME's partnership with NOAA, NIOZ, DEA, BCRE, ACEP and IFREMER are helping to delpoy and maintain sophisticated long-term monitoring equipment through the region. These multi-national, multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary cruises further enhance regional capacity through joint training activities, access to data and information sharing.

South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) Monitoring Line in the South-East Atlantic Ocean on Algoa Voyage 210, September 2014

The South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) Monitoring Line in the South-East Atlantic Ocean was conducted on the Algoa Voyage 210, 15 to 29 September, 2014. This cruise had a primary scientific objective of extending the SAMBA mooring line, the offshore section of the Cape Point long-term monitoring line, and deploying the four offshore tall moorings. Four tall moorings were recovered, serviced and re-deployed on the SAMBA transect, incorporating ADCP’s and Sea-Bird Microcats.

Leg 1 of the African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme (ACEP) II on the Algoa Voyage 177, July 2010

The Algoa sailed from Durban on 16 July 2010 to conduct a hydrographic survey of the Natal Bight as part of the winter African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme (ACEP) II. A total of 16 shore-normal transects were occupied between Scottburgh and St. Lucia. The aim of the synoptic survey was to determine the nutrient sources of the Natal Bight ecosystem, and to characterise the focus sites across the Bight.

Benguela Current Sources and Transport (BEST 1) on the Africana Voyage 105, June 1992

The Benguela Current Sources and Transport (BEST 1) was conducted on the Africana Voyage 105 from 16 June 1992 to 05 July 1992. The objectives of the survey was the quantification of the flux and Agulhas rings penetrating the South-East Atlantic and the influence of these on the shelf waters and resources of the Benguela system; the provision of a large-scale environmental time-series lasting for a continuous period of 18 months. This was used to validate processes inferred from satellite imagery, thereby enhancing utility of the latter for fisheries environmental monitoring as needed for fisheries research; determination of the distribution and abundance of rock lobster larvae in the South-East Atlantic, to supplement the existing data which were collected in April 1989.
