South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) Monitoring Line in the South-East Atlantic Ocean on Algoa Voyage 221, November 2015

The South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) Monitoring Line in the South-East Atlantic Ocean was conducted on the Algoa Voyage 221, 30 November to 14 December, 2015. SAMBA forms part of the South African component of the International South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA), which aims to characterise the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa.

Raw CTD data from Port St Johns Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD) and Bathymetry Survey on Algoa Voyage 198, May 2013

Raw Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) data from Port St Johns Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) and Bathymetry Survey on Algoa Voyage 198, 8 May - 13 May, 2013. This cruise has two scientific objectives: (1) to investigate the dynamics of the Port St. Johns eddy and biological implications and (2) to investigate the existence of mesoscale eddies in the Agulhas Current. In the case of the former, Oceans & Coasts was asked to provide input to the recent spate of shark attacks off Port St. Johns. Very little is known about the oceanography except that Roberts et al (2010) discovered during a cruise a lee-trapped cyclonic eddy off Port St. Johns that caused substantial slope upwelling. The cold upwelled water is nutrient-rich and appears to provide a biological pump to the local ecosystem. This cruise will deploy an ADCP in a depth of approximately 80 m to determine the frequency of appearance of this eddy coupled with Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) lines to measure...

Processed Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) and Total Alkalinity (TA) data from the Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela (IEP:SB) on Algoa Voyage 259, May 2019

This is processed Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) and Total Alkalinity (TA) data from the Integrated Ecosystem Programme cruise in the Southern Benguela (IEP-SB). The cruise took place from 21 to 26 May 2019 aboard the RV Algoa. A total of 34 stations were occupied along three transect lines on the west coast of South Africa. Ten Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) stations were occupied along the Kleinsee Monitoring Line (KML) of Kleinsee, ten along the Namaqua Monitoring Line (NML) of Namaqua, twelve stations along the St Helena Bay Monitoring Line (SHBML), two separate stations in the low oxygen zone in St Helena Bay. Discrete water samples were collected in 500ml Certified Reference Materials (CRM) bottles from Niskin bottles and spiked with 0,02% of Mercuric chloride before being stored in the dark at room temperature for later analysis in the laboratory ashore using a Versatile INstrument for the Determination of Total inorganic carbon and titration Alkalinity (VINDTA)....

Processed underway Thermosalinograph (TSG) observations from the Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela (IEP: SB) on the Algoa Voyage 287, November 2022

Here we present the 6-second resolution processed Thermosalinograph (TSG) data collected between 21 November and 30 November 2022 during the Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela (IEP:SB) on the RS Algoa Voyage 287. A SeaBird SBE45 TSG is used to opportunistically collect underway near-surface temperature and conductivity measurements during research and monitoring cruises. Water is continuously pumped to the TSG from an intake located in the hull of the vessel, and the observations are continuously interfaced with navigational information. A temperature sensor close to the intake provides temperature measurements of the incoming water (T1). The temperature of the water inside the conductivity cell (T2) is used to accurately compute salinity (S) from the conductivity measurements (C). This is a long-term monitoring line conducted off the coast of Kleinsee, Namaqualand, Elands/St Helena Bay and Scarborough on the west coast of South Africa. The IEP:SB in 2013...

Pelagic Fish Spawner Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 126, November 1994

The Pelagic Fish Spawner Biomass Survey was conducted on the Africana Voyage 126 from 11 November to 7 December 1994. The principal scientific tasks of this cruise were acoustic surveying whilst underway and frequent ad hoc midwater trawling on pelagic fish targets. Temperature profiles and egg samples were to be collected at 5- or 10-mile stations. On selected transects, zooplankton samples were to be collected with a vertical Bongo haul on station and an oblique Bongo tow out of the station. Temperature, light and fluorescence profiles were to be obtained using the Magnum. In addition, on these transects, the water samples were to be collected at the surface and the fluorescence maximum and live copepods collected by means of a drift net for incubation experiments to determine egg production and moulting rates. CTD casts and ADCP measurements were planned for certain stations during both legs.

West Coast Hake Biomass on the Africana Voyage 015, January 1984

The purpose of this cruise was to survey by means of trawling the abundance of recruiting and adult hake between the Orange River and longitude 20° E. Chicha Touza, the Spanish trawler used for similar surveys, to investigate the environment of hake and other demersal species and to carry out acoustic target identification of mesopelagic species using RMT 8 nets.

Raw CTD data from the St Helena Bay Monitoring Line (SHBML) on the Algoa Voyage 193, January 2013

This is raw Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) data from the St Helena Bay Monitoring Line January 2013 cruise (now under the Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela). The St Helena Bay Monitoring Line was initiated as a BENEFIT-driven project on "shipboard monitoring" which linked with similar lines run in Namibia and Angola. The aims are to obtain seasonal and interannual information on the hydrology and productivity of the area. Data on harmful algal blooms, low oxygen water and intrusions of Agulhas Bank water along the west coast will also be collected. A long-term, multi-decadel time-series (from 1951 onward) of information already exists for this important region and has continued in the form of the IEP:SB to detect long-term changes in the hydrology and the plankton, which are important for the detection of regime shifts.
