Compilation of processed and validated data of mesozooplankton along the St Helena Bay Monitoring Line (SHBML) (now under the Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela) on the Africana, Voyage 269, from 11 to 13 January 2011. This includes the validated flow, processed counts and validated ship`s information. This is ready for analysis by a user. The St Helena Bay Monitoring Line was initiated as a BENEFIT-driven project on "shipboard monitoring" which linked with similar lines run in Namibia and Angola. The aims are to obtain seasonal and interannual information on the hydrology and productivity of the area. Data on harmful algal blooms, low oxygen water and intrusions of Agulhas Bank water along the west coast are also collected. The cruise operated from Hondeklip Bay to Port St Johns, South Africa.The principal aim of the Pelagic Biomass Surveys is to obtain estimates of the total biomass of anchovy, sardine and west coast round herring and to obtain data on their population length frequency compositions, for input to the operational management procedure (OMP) for making Total Allowable Catch (TAC) recommendations for the following year. Microplankton monitoring along the west coast of South Africa

Microplankton, comprising of both phyto- and zooplankton in the 20-200μm size range, are a diverse and ecologically important group. They form the foundation of the food web, are instrumental in carbon and nutrient cycling, generate at least 50% of global oxygen and facilitate energy flow to higher trophic levels. Although they are found in all oceans globally, their diversity and abundance is varied. Due to their high sensitivity and rapid response to changes in the environment, their biomass and diversity are considered Essential Ocean Variables (EOV's) for routine and sustained long term observations to assess global ocean changes. Pelagic Pre-Recruit Mesopelagic Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 101, March 1992

The Pelagic Pre-Recruit Mesopelagic Biomass Survey was conducted on the Africana Voyage 101 from 11-23 March 1992. The objectives of the cruise were to get an estimation of the biomass and population structure of pelagic pre-recruit fish off the West Coast by means of echo-integration and midwater trawling; to get an estimation of a pelagic pre-recruit biomass index using quantitative Methot trawls; to get an an estimation of the biomass and population structure of mesopelagic fish using echo-integration and midwater trawling; to investigate the behaviour of pelagic pre-recruit fish in relation to oceanographic variables; to collect biological material for age, oil content, diet and condition studies on pelagic pre-recruits; to profile currents by means of the acoustic doppler current profiler; and to test the feasibility of using a towed transducer for the acoustic assessment of pelagic pre-recruits.

Processed imagery data collected off the western margin's deep-sea environment on Algoa Voyage 246, February 2018

The aim of the Integrated Ecosystem Program (IEP) Benthic Project is to establish a baseline for epi-benthic invertebrate distribution, in order to identify benthic indicators for long-term monitoring within the pre-determined IEP monitoring lines. Ten stations were successfully surveyed, on board the R/V Algoa in February 2018, using a towed under-water benthic camera. The acquired abundance data represents five stations from the Kleinsee transect, four from Namaqua and one from St Helena Bay.

Port St Johns Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD) and Bathymetry Survey on Algoa Voyage 198, May 2013

The Port St Johns Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) and Bathymetry Survey was conducted on the Algoa Voyage 198, 8 May - 13 May, 2013. This cruise has two scientific objectives: (1) to investigate the dynamics of the Port St. Johns eddy and biological implications and (2) to investigate the existence of mesoscale eddies in the Agulhas Current. In the case of the former, Oceans and Coasts was asked to provide input to the recent spate of shark attacks off Port St. Johns. Very little is known about the oceanography except that Roberts et al (2010) discovered during a cruise a lee-trapped cyclonic eddy off Port St. Johns that caused substantial slope upwelling. The cold upwelled water is nutrient-rich and appears to provide a biological pump to the local ecosystem. This cruise will deploy an ADCP in a depth of approximately 80 m to determine the frequency of appearance of this eddy coupled with Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) lines to measure the biological implications....

Benthic‑bycatch dataset from Prince Edward and Marion Islands longline fisheries (2009‑2023)

This dataset presents a time series of benthic invertebrate bycatch records collected during pelagic longline fishing operations targeting Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) in the Prince Edward Islands region of the sub-Antarctic Southern Ocean from 2009 to 2023. The data were obtained from independent scientific observers aboard commercial vessels in accordance with Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) Conservation Measure 22-06, which mandates the reporting of taxa associated with Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs).
