Abstract | This is processed Shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (SADCP) data from the IIOE2 cruise on SA Agulhas II Voyage 028 in October, 2017. The International Indian Ocean Expedition 2 is a collaborative regional cruise to build capacity and strength within Africa. The focus will be on developing students in the region in the areas of physical oceanography, chemistry, biological oceanography, benthic biodiversity, marine top predators and marine plastics. This dataset was processed using older standards which may not align with international best practices and the standards currently adhered to by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE). The Department is re-processing and replacing data to ensure everything has the same format and is of the same quality and datasets will be marked as obsoleted once that is done. As such the user assumes the entire risk related to the use of these data in its current state and format. DFFE disclaims all warranties of the data whether expressed or implied, including without limitation, any warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. For any concerns regarding the data, the user may decide to liaise with the listed PIs who will share their insight on the data quality, where possible. It is also strongly recommended that the user liaises with the listed PIs regarding their proposed projects to mitigate against duplication of research efforts. |
Methods | This ADCP dataset was collected on the SA Agulhas II Voyage 028 from 14 October to 15 November, 2017. The data was collected from a seventy five kilohertz ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) mounted on a drop keel below the ship, 12m below the water line. Typically the ADCP is switched on when the ship leaves port and turned off when the ship returns. The netCDF file contains information about the set-up (bin size, number of bins, sampling frequency etc) and is COARDS (Cooperative Ocean/Atmosphere Research Data Service) compliant. This data was processed from the LTA (long term average) files using CODAS (Common Ocean Data Acquisition System). This procedure included:- bottom detection,- manual spike removal, and- CODAS recalibration. The curation QA process edited the netCDF files to be CF compliant. Please note that the files are not completely CF compliant, as suitable equivalent CF standards could not always be found. |
