Abstract Here we present processed magnitude and direction of hourly currents in the water column (1766 - 2862m) from Doppler Volume Sampler (DVS) instruments located at M9 (34.50295°S; 17.1242°E) along the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean, between 15 October 2018 and 06 October 2020. The South African component of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA) aims to characterise the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa.
Methods Subsurface-mounted, upward-looking, 2400 kHz RD Instruments Doppler Volume Samplers (DVS) were configured with a bin size of 0.8m and a blanking distance of 0.3m, and deployed in the water column (1766 - 2862m) at location M9 (34.50295°S; 17.1242°E), along the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean. The instrument measured hourly magnitude and direction in the water column between 15 October 2018 09h00 and 06 October 2020 05h00. These hourly values were corrected for magnetic declination, and only hourly values which showed ≥ 75% good beam data were used.
