Abstract Here we present raw data from an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), located at a depth of 466m at M9 (34.50295°S; 17.1242°E) along the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean, between 16 October 2018 and 05 October 2020. The South African component of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA) aims to characterise the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa.
Methods The raw data, collected from a subsurface mounted, upward-looking, 75 kHz RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), was configured with a bin size of 16m and a blanking distance of 7.04m and deployed at a depth of 466m at location M9 (34.50295°S; 17.1242°E) along the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-scale Array (SAMBA) transect in the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic Ocean. The instrument measured hourly magnitude and direction throughout the water column between 16 October 2018 and 05 October 2020.
