Processed CTD continuous observations from the Physical Oceanography Gear Trials on the Africana Voyage 091, April 1991

Here we present processed downcast Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) continuous data collected, between 29 April and 30 April 1991, during voyage 091 on the FRS Africana, in the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) region on the west coast of Southern Africa. Neil Brown MK3 and MK4 CTD instruments were used to measure pressure, temperature and conductivity through the water column during research and monitoring cruises between 1983 and 2000.

Processed Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) and Total Alkalinity (TA) data from the Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela (IEP:SB) on the Algoa Voyage 214, February 2015

This is processed Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) and Total Alkalinity (TA) data from the Integrated Ecosystem Programme cruise in the Southern Benguela (IEP-SB). The cruise took place from 16 to 24 February 2015 aboard the RV Algoa. A total of 34 stations were occupied along three transect lines on the west coast of South Africa and additional stations where a red tide was crossed. Ten Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) stations were occupied along the Kleinsee Monitoring Line (KML) of Kleinsee, ten along the Namaqua Monitoring Line (NML) of Namaqua, twelve stations along the St Helena Bay Monitoring Line (SHBML) and two separate stations in the low oxygen zone in St Helena Bay. South Coast Demersal Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 086, September 1990

South Coast Demersal Biomass Survey was conducted on the Africana Voyage 086 from 07 September - 02 October 1990. The objectives of the cruise were to survey by means of bottom trawling (under 200 m) the abundance and distribution of adult and juvenile hake, sole, squid, horse mackerel and other demersal target species and to make biomass estimates of each; to study the hydrological environment using the CTD and ADCP and to relate this information to the catches of hake , sole, squid, horse mackerel and other trawl species. The investigation included hydrological transects off the Eastern Cape Coast from inside the bay areas outwards to the shelf -break or main Agulhas stream; a pilot survey using a Calvet net to investigate the feasibility of determining sole egg distribution for the egg production technique; data on the eggs and larvae of other species were also collected. Raw PC02 data from the South Coast Mooring Cruise on the Algoa Voyage 208, July 2014

Raw pCO2 data collected on the South Coast Mooring Cruise on the Algoa Voyage 208, 9 to 24 July 2014. The South Coast Mooring Cruise had two scientific objectives: (1) Service, maintain and extend the in situ operational oceanography network currently deployed around South Africa and (2) to investigate the dynamics of the Port St Johns eddy and biological implications. Between 1988 and 2011, environmental and plankton sampling was conducted every summer along the South Coast during the annual pelagic spawner biomass surveys. This is pre-processed Shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (SADCP) data from the South Coast Moorings and Monitoring Lines Cruise on Algoa Voyage 213 on 1 to 19 December, 2014. Between 1988 and 2011, environmental and plankton sampling was conducted every summer along the South Coast during the annual pelagic spawner biomass surveys. Raw SADCP data from ACEP Deep Secrets: The Outer Shelf and Slope Ecosystems of the Eastern Cape on the Algoa Voyage 230, September 2016

This is raw Shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (SADCP) data collected on the ACEP Deep Secrets Cruise which set out to fill in gaps and shed light on the priority areas and research questions identified during the recent Marine Protected Area and Marine Spatial Planning Initiatives of Operation Phakisa’s Marine Protection and Governance Lab. Using underwater cameras (SkiMonkey and Drop camera), grabs, dredges and a CTD the study aimed to improve our knowledge on marine offshore habitats, as well as to build understanding of the effects of the expanding fishing and petroleum industries on marine offshore communities.

Winter Shakedown Cruise on SA Agulhas II Voyage 003, July 2012

The Winter Shakedown Cruise was conducted on the SA Agulhas II, Voyage 003, 9 July to 6 August, 2012. The cruise started in Cape Town and went down to the GoodHope Line then up to the Prince Edward Islands, on to Port Elizabeth and then back to Cape Town. Southern Ocean Seasonal Cycle Experiment (SOSCEx) III Winter Cruise on the SA Agulhas II Voyage 016, July 2015

The third Southern Ocean Seasonal Cycle Experiment (SOSCEx) III is a high-resolution full seasonal cycle experiment using integrated observational and modelling platforms. A novel aspect of SOSCEx III is the integrated multi-platform approach, which aims to explore new questions about the climate sensitivity of carbon and ecosystem dynamics in the Southern Ocean and how these processes are parameterized in models. This winter 2015 cruise can be divided into two primary tracks, the GoodHope line, between Cape Town and the ice edge along the Greenwich Meridian, and the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) line, between Cape Town and the Greenwich Meridian, at 34.5 degrees South longitude.

Processed CTD discrete observations from the West Coast Hake Biomass on the Africana Voyage 022, July 1984

This is processed Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) discrete data from the upcast from the West Coast Hake Biomass cruise on the Africana Voyage 022 collected between 3 and 28 July 1984. The cruise operated in the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) region on the west coast of South Africa. The objectives of this cruise were to survey by means of trawling the abundance of adult and recruiting hake; to investigate the diurnal cycle and the environment of hake and other demersal species; to carry out acoustic target identification of mesopelagic species using RMT-8 nets and to study the community interactions of fish species in the area.
