Processed CTD discrete observations from the Pelagic Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 108, November 1992
Here we present processed Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) discrete data from the upcast collected, between 05 November and 02 December 1992, during voyage 108 on the FRS Africana, in the Agulhas Current Large Marine Ecosystem (ACLME) region on the south coast of Southern Africa and the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) region on the west coast of Southern Africa. Neil Brown MK3 and MK4 CTD instruments were used to measure pressure, temperature and conductivity through the...
South Coast Demersal Inshore Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 106, September 1992
The South Coast Demersal Inshore Biomass Survey was conducted on the Africana Voyage 106 from 02 to 23 September 1992. The objectives of the survey were to conduct a stratified bottom trawl survey to assess the biomass, abundance and distribution of hake, sole, horse mackerel, squid and other trawl species with emphasis on 'inshore' fishing areas for recruitment estimates; to investigate the hydrology and current profiles of the South Coast and to relate this to the distribution pf the...
Benguela Current Sources and Transport (BEST 1) on the Africana Voyage 105, June 1992
The Benguela Current Sources and Transport (BEST 1) was conducted on the Africana Voyage 105 from 16 June 1992 to 05 July 1992. The objectives of the survey was the quantification of the flux and Agulhas rings penetrating the South-East Atlantic and the influence of these on the shelf waters and resources of the Benguela system; the provision of a large-scale environmental time-series lasting for a continuous period of 18 months. This was used to validate processes inferred from satellite...
Long-term observations of nearshore temperatures around southern Africa
Since January 1990, Underwater Temperature Recorders (UTRs) have been deployed at selected sites around Southern Africa to obtain long-term records of bottom temperature in the nearshore environment, at depths ranging from 2m to 34m.
Raw temperature data for long-term observations of bottom temperatures at Moheli, Comoros (September 2004 - October 2007)
Here we present raw temperatures from Underwater Temperature Recorders (UTRs) located at a depth of 21m off Moheli, Comoros (12.3916°S 43.7390°E), along the east coast of Southern Africa, between 05 September 2004 and 05 October 2007. At selected sites around Southern Africa, UTRs have been used to obtain long-term records of bottom temperature in the nearshore environment, at depths ranging from 2m to 34m. Note that for some deployments, two UTRs were deployed to simultaneously record...

The South Coast Demersal Hake Biomass Survey was conducted on the Africana Voyage 072 from 10 May to 29 May 1989. The objectives of the cruise were to survey by means of bottom-trawling the abundance of adult and recruiting hake, sole and other trawl target species; to make experimental bottom-trawls in deep water to collect deep-water specimens of fish and squid; to test the feasibility of an acoustic assessment of horse mackerel; to investigate the environment and ecological...
