Processed CTD discrete observations from the Horse Mackerel Hydroacoustic Pilot Survey on the Africana Voyage 096, October 1991
Here we present processed Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) discrete data from the upcast collected between 14 October and 28 October 1991, during voyage 096 on the FRS Africana, in the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) region on the west coast of Southern Africa and the Agulhas Current Large Marine Ecosystem (ACLME) region on the south coast of Southern Africa. Neil Brown MK3 and MK4 CTD instruments were used to measure pressure, temperature and conductivity through the...
Benguela Current Sources and Transport (BEST 1) on the Africana Voyage 105, June 1992
The Benguela Current Sources and Transport (BEST 1) was conducted on the Africana Voyage 105 from 16 June 1992 to 05 July 1992. The objectives of the survey was the quantification of the flux and Agulhas rings penetrating the South-East Atlantic and the influence of these on the shelf waters and resources of the Benguela system; the provision of a large-scale environmental time-series lasting for a continuous period of 18 months. This was used to validate processes inferred from satellite...
Processed CTD continuous observations from the Benguela Current Sources and Transport (BEST 1) on the Africana Voyage 105, June 1992
Here we present processed downcast Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) continuous data collected, between 16 June and 05 July 1992, during voyage 105 on the FRS Africana, in the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) on the west coast of Southern Africa. Neil Brown MK3 and MK4 CTD instruments were used to measure pressure, temperature and conductivity through the water column during research and monitoring cruises between 1983 and 2000.

Unusual mortality events of whales of the genus Kogia along the South African coastline between 2010 and 2020
This report provides stranding trends of whales (genus Kogia) for the areas between Strandfontein on the West Coast and Grootbrak River on the South Coast of South Africa between 2010 and 2020 for the benefit of Municipalities, Scientists and Managers. The report is a product of Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) marine mammal health monitoring efforts under the title: "Long-term monitoring of the effects of environmental changes and humans activities on the health and...
Agulhas Bank Boundary Processes on the Africana Voyage 099, January 1992
The Agulhas Bank Boundary Processes was conducted on the Africana Voyage 099, from 07-28 January 1992. The objectives of the cruise were to study the entrainment/loss of biota (fish eggs, larvae and plankton) along the shelf and shelf-edge by currents. This was undertaken by means of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP; current) measurements, and regular collection of biota with a combined bongo/calVET net with u³; to estimate the flux of the Agulhas Current along two lines by means of...

A 2022 update to trends of seabirds and seals in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape
This report provides an update on the trends for seals and seabirds in Saldanha Bay for the year 2022. The Benguela Upwelling Ecosystem is home to various endemic seabirds and a single species of fur seal, exclusive to the southern African region (South Africa, Namibia, and Angola). The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has been conducting extensive monitoring of population trends, diet, and foraging behaviour of multiple seabird species. The objective is to gather...
Cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus) pup trends at breeding colonies within the proposed Sandveld Coastal Complex Protected Area Management Plan
This report focuses on the trends of Cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus) pups within the proposed Sandveld Coastal Complex (SCC) Protected Area Management Plan at various breeding colonies. CapeNature is currently in the process of developing a Management Plan for the Sandveld Coastal Complex (SCC) Protected Area, in compliance with the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, 2003 (Act No. 57 of 2003). The SCC harbors significant breeding sites for Cape fur seals...
Demersal South Coast Inshore Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 122, June 1994
The Demersal South Coast Inshore Biomass Survey was conducted on the Africana 122 from 6 June to 5 July 1994. The primary objective of this cruise was to conduct a stratified bottom trawl survey to assess the biomass, abundance and distribution of hake, sole, horse mackerel, squid and other trawl species on the Agulhas Bank.

Here we present processed downcast Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) continuous data collected between 06 June and 05 July 1994, during Voyage 122 on the FRS Africana, in the Agulhas Current Large Marine Ecosystem (ACLME) on the south coast of Southern Africa. Neil Brown MK3 and MK4 CTD instruments were used to measure pressure, temperature and conductivity through the water column during research and monitoring cruises between 1983 and 2000.

Effectiveness of Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area project (2017-2021)
Intertidal rocky shores are the most accessible marine habitats and therefore heavily impacted by harvesting. In recent years, they have also been increasingly invaded by alien species, which compounds the effects of harvesting on rocky shore community composition and functioning. Recent survey data, combined with historical data from 1970, were used to assess temporal changes over the intervening period in rocky shore communities at two sites (Wireless Point and Wireless Island).
